People come to Gemtree to relax and ‘get away from it all’, and there are a number of things to do to keep you entertained. You’ll find there is something for everyone!
Nature Trail Gemtree has 250 acres of natural bushland for you to enjoy. Borrow a full colour booklet from Reception, featuring a popular self-guided nature trail meandering through the property. A brilliant opportunity to enjoy and learn about the native flora and fauna of the area. This trail is particularly popular in the late afternoons when the birds are playing along the sandy creek bed or around the billabong. The perfect location for avid photographers, bushwalkers and birdwatchers.
Bird Watching
Gemtree enjoys wonderful birdlife and has an extensive list of local birds for avid bird watchers to access. Binoculars and bird books are available for hire at Reception.

Feed the Fish in the Billabong Gemtree has a small billabong that contains local fresh water fish, ‘Spangled Grunter’. These fish are too small to catch to eat, but it is fun to feed and watch them come to the surface and follow you as you walk around the edge of the water. Ask at the shop for small packets of fishfood. Unfortunately there is no swimming allowed in the billabong which has a plastic liner. Children MUST be attended by an adult when in the vicinity of the billabong - the water is very deep. We've just had wonderful rains in January 2010 - the first good fall for three years - with the river running a banker, so our billabong has been filled at last!
Jogging Track For those who enjoy a daily jog, Gemtree has a number of tracks along which guests can run safely. Please ask at Reception for information on which roads you can access.
Bicycle Track
A challenging bicycle track is now available with bicycles for hire at Reception for $10 per hour. It can be heavy going in places but has scenic views of the nearby Strangways Ranges and beautiful River Red Gums. Riders (and bushwalkers) are asked not to stray from the well marked track , for safety reasons. For shorter rides, there are many roadways around the park to take a ride.
Self Drive 4WD Tours There are several different self-drive options on local 4WD tracks around Gemtree, at no cost. These are ‘secret destinations’ that only Gemtree visitors have access to. All self-drive tours travel through local pastoral leases so we ask guests to please show consideration when entering these private properties. Gemtree will provide mud maps with directions and there is a security check-in book at Reception for guests to fill out with their vehicle particulars as they leave.
Old Ambalindum - Arltunga:
For another 4WD experience try travelling into the beautiful eastern MacDonnells from Gemtree via the nearby Binns Track to the Arltunga goldmining ghost town and Old Ambalindum, where you can camp overnight on a cattle station and experience other 4WD options, providing an interesting alternative scenic route back to Alice Springs. Spend some time strolling through the wonderful old historic stone buildings from the gold rush days at the turn of the 20th Century.
Golf:
Gemtree's 9-hole golf course offers a unique experience for those who want to try their skills. For only $5 per family per game, it's a bit of a 'bush bash' with the occasional tree, kangaroo or goanna in the way - but fun to give it a go. Old clubs are available at Reception.
Guided Family History Day Tours
We're planning to run full day tours around Cameron's family cattle stations this year in a comfortable, airconditioned mini bus. Cameron is a true bushman and his knowledge of the history of the area is unparalleled. Join him to learn something of his own family pioneering history and other local pastoralists as well as the Harts Range mica miners and local Aboriginal people. A chance to also study the flora and fauna. For $165 per person you will not be sorry to be a part of this very private tour. A picnic lunch will be provided with billy tea for morning and afternoon smokos. Contact Gemtree to inquire about the availability and make a booking. We hope this tour will soon be available once registrations and licences are in place. If you are staying a night or two with us, why not get together with your fellow campers and arrange a tour, as minimum numbers will be required.
