Every Easter we hold "The Big Dig" which is great fun for the kids. This treasure hunt entertains families as they dig for Easter eggs in the sandy creekbed of the Gillen Creek running along the edge of the park. The prize is a lovely polished stone egg, for the lucky winner. In the late spring, we hold a sandcastle competition for children in the park - a nice cool activity in the shaded sandy creek bed.
This year we introduced Kate's Campoven Kitchen which has been a huge success! Saturday nights have alternated with scrumptious baked spuds, overflowing with chopped bacon and onions and topped with sour cream and chives - or delicious creamy shepherd's pie. Sunday roasts, sitting up to candle-lit tables and warmed by firebuckets have been the most popular. Succulent Territory beef roasts with an assortment of melt-in-the-mouth baked vegies. Off the cuff entertainment has accompanied these weekend events including a re-vamp of our old Paddy Melon Bowls, family history films, karaoke/sing-along nights, laser lights flickering across the night skies and "BIG SCREEN" events (footy finals, State of Origin games) live on a huge TV screen in the park. Daughter Kate has excelled herself and her contagious energy and enthusiasm has seen park residents participating with great gusto! A weekend bar licence this year has been a welcome addition.
Territory Day (July 1st) is an opportunity for Gemtree to hold a celebratory fireworks display. Always a thrill in our remote location.
Entertainment - From time to time we are lucky enough to discover hidden talent amongst our park guests and several have offered to entertain us at our functions. A special night this year was a performance by former SA band Therapy.....who enjoyed getting together for old times sake as they travelled about the countryside.
Harts Range Races and Rodeo Harts Range is just 75 kms further along the Plenty Highway from Gemtree. Every August long weekend the Harts Range Racecourse comes alive with a family sports gathering, race meeting, rodeo and ball. Gemtree is currently the official sponsor of one of the horse races, ‘The Gemtree Bracelet’. Park residents have an option to travel on to Harts Range and join in the fun for this annual bush event. Gemtree provides hot takeaway snacks for travellers looking for a break as they return to Alice on the Monday after the event. Accommodation bookings at Gemtree are essential at this time of year.
